BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A Department of Labor spokesperson has identified the miner killed Tuesday at the Shoal Creek Mine as 28-year-old Julius Walker III.

Jesse Lawder, the official, says that Walker was killed while workers were moving a portion of longwall equipment. Lawder says that that part of the mine remains closed Wednesday.

Lawder said Tuesday that Walker was given CPR during transport from underground to the surface but was pronounced dead after being brought out of the mine.

Darryl Dewberry, a representative for the United Mine Workers of America, said Walker was "an experienced miner." Walker has been with Drummond Company, which operates the mine, since 2005.

According to Lawder, Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) personnel continue to conduct an accident investigation. When their preliminary report is available, it will be posted here: http://www.msha.gov/fatals/fabc2012.asp.
