The Helena bypass would connect Alabama 261north of Helena to Highway 52. Source: WBRC videoFor years, traffic congestion has been a big problem in parts of the Shelby County town of Helena. But now plans for a major bypass int he city are one step closer to becoming reality.
Tuesday, ALDOT awarded the contract for surveying on the project to begin. An engineering firm based in Helena will complete the survey. City leaders say having the project go to a company right in town was an extra bonus.
For years the city has been growing but this could help even more. The bypass is expected to cover about ten miles and will start north of Helena on Alabama 261 just before the quarry, flyover the Cahaba River, over the train tracks and end up connecting with Shelby County Highway 52.
