A big company is making a big difference for a local family. The family's had a tough time dealing with their son's living situation ever since a serious accident that put him in a wheelchair. But thanks to The Home Depot in Pelham, that problem will soon be solved.
Three years ago, Timothy Cardwell lived a normal life. So did his parents. But a tragic accident changed their lives forever. Timothy is wheel chair bound, living in his parents' basement. "We just take it day by day," said Ruby Cardwell, Timothy's mother.
Cardwell showed us just how cramped Timothy's living quarters are. His bed is pushed up against a wall. It should be centered in the room, with his electric chair on one side, and his shower chair on the other. Also in his room should be work out equipment, but there's no room. And his medical supplies are crammed in closets. "We just have to live with it, but you don't want things like this," said Cardwell.
Thanks to The Home Depot in Pelham they no longer have to live that way. The Home Depot building is Timothy a new bedroom with plenty of room and a walk-in closet. "It made me smile, cry, and everything else. I said what!" said Cardwell.
For two weeks now, volunteers with The Home Depot have been coming by the Cardwell's. And day by day, Timothy's room is becoming more real. "They don't just come out here and build. They are almost like counselors, they listen. They really cared about what Timothy was talking about. They knew what he was talking about," said Cardwell.
The past three years haven't been easy, but Ruby knows she's not walking this road alone. "God has put so many angels in our way. Our path has been hard but so good. We never know who's going to be at the door," said Cardwell. "I appreciate it so much, so much."
The Home Depot is even building Ruby a laundry room. Timothy is just as grateful, he says Home Depot is giving him his independence back. And with this bigger room he can use all of his equipment, and there is a chance Timothy could walk again.
