The Blount County Coroner has identified the man killed in a head-on collision Wednesday morning near Oneonta as Billy Joe Harris.
The wreck happened on Highway 39 just north of Oneonta around 7:30 a.m. State troopers said two pickups collided head-on and a passenger was killed in the wreck. One of the trucks was carrying a load of bundled sandstone, which fell on top of one of the trucks. State troopers said the load may have shifted and caused the accident.
Both drivers of the trucks were airlifted to UAB hospital. Their conditions are still unknown. Earlier Wednesday, officials believed Harris to be trapped by the load of sandstone in one of the trucks.
Highway 39 was shut down for several hours while authorities investigated the accident.
