The Sigma Chi fraternity house at the University of Alabama. Source: WBRC videoA former University of Alabama student has accused Alabama football player Kelly Johnson of assaulting him during a fraternity event two years ago.
In the lawsuit, plaintiff Logan Herring accuses Johnson of kicking and punching him in the head "numerous times, rendering Herring unconscious."
Herring also names the Iota Iota chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity in the lawsuit. He accuses the fraternity and other unidentified defendants of not only providing alcohol at pledge events, but forcing underage attendees to drink, which created an atmosphere of "negligence" to University codes and local law.
The incident happened nearly two years ago at a pledge event. According to the lawsuit, Herring was given alcohol. He began to feel sick and had gone to the bathroom when Johnson allegedly attacked him.
Herring contends that he has suffered brain injuries from the incident, depression, memory loss and even moved to a different university.
The national office of the Sigma Chi Fraternity released this statement Tuesday evening in response to the lawsuit:
