Officials say the victim was working with a re-striping crew on I-459 near Acton Road the night of Aug. 27 when a driver hit him around 11:30 p.m. and fled the scene. The victim was critically injured and has been hospitalized for several weeks.
On Sept. 13, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office asked the public for help with identifying the driver of the vehicle involved in the hit and run. The sheriff's office says the owner of the vehicle came forward and said a relative had been driving the vehicle, a 2004 Nissan Murano, the night of the hit and run. Investigators identified the driver and have obtained a warrant for her arrest.
The suspect, 45-year-old Melia Sims of Trussville, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with a physical injury. Her bond is $2,500. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says her lawyer is arranging her surrender.
The victim in the case remains in the hospital waiting for rehab.
