Oxford Police have identified the man who died during his arrest Tuesday morning.
Jay Coburn of Jasper, Georgia became short of breath while officers were arresting him for causing a disturbance and trying to steal a car from a local car sales lot.
Coburn was transferred to Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Police say that employees at Pressley Auto Sales called them to report that Coburn was at their lot acting strangely and breaking windows on vehicles.
When officers arrived Coburn was inside of a vehicle and refused their orders to come out. One of the officers reached for his stun gun and when Coburn saw the motion, he reportedly exited through the passenger side of the vehicle and starting running towards an officer.
That's when the officer used his stun gun on Coburn.
"Once they got him and cuffed him he started going into respiratory arrest," said Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge.
Coburn has been sent to Huntsville for an autopsy.
