Two law enforcement agencies are investigating the theft of an ATM from a Calhoun County bank - and the theft of the forklift used to remove it.
Anniston Police answered the alarm call around 4:30 Sunday morning at the Regions Bank branch, located on Highway 431 near Saks Road in Saks. That's when they found the bank's ATM missing, and some damage to the ceiling of the bank's drive-thru canopy.
They also found a lull-type forklift abandoned in the parking lot. The forklift was determined to have been stolen from Alexandria Car Care a short distance away on Highway 431.
Surveillance video from the bank shows the forklift removing the ATM from its concrete piling and taking it somewhere out of frame. However, police are looking at videos from other nearby businesses and say they have a description of a possible vehicle that "could have been" the one used to remove the ATM from the premises.
So far police have made no arrests and have not found the ATM.
"I would imagine that there was some thought put into this, as what they needed to do," said Anniston Police Lt. Fred Forsythe. "[It would lead] us to believe it was not the first time they've done this."
Anniston police are investigating the theft of the ATM while the Calhoun County Sheriff's office is looking into the theft of the ATM used in the heist.
Police would especially like to hear from any member of the public who may have seen the forklift being driven from Alexandria to Saks, mostly likely via Highway 431, between 10 p.m. Saturday and 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The police number is 256-238-1800 or 256-240-4000.
