Several north Birmingham community members are wondering if they have been exposed to environmental poison. The Environmental Protection Agency is concerned about possible contamination around the Walter Coke Plant.
The EPA held a meeting Monday to discuss the screening process, and a possible cleanup. Walter Coke has not been named a responsible party, but it is expected to be named in the future.
The EPA is asking over 1,200 residents in the Harriman Park, Fairmont, and Collegeville communities to allow soil, sediment, and surface water testing.
"So we're going to try and educate folks that the real power will be in those numbers in the constituents and what we find in the soil," said Franklin Hill in the EPA.
Yesterday's meeting was one of several planned forums. The EPA plans to conduct more meetings geared toward specific communities that may have been affected.
