BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A new group has formed to help families pay funeral expenses for loved ones who are murdered.

Linda Johnson and others are forming the group, called The Willing Hands. They have been organizing vigils to help raise money to pay for the funerals. The group held a vigil last week for 22-year-old Neisha Dawson's family. Dawson, a mother to a one-year-old, was found murdered in the North Smithfield community two weeks ago.

Johnson says her son's best friend was murdered and needed help. She believes there are several other families in need.

"We done help with three funerals this year. There is others funerals we didn't know anything about, you know what I'm saying? We put ourselves out there. People will know how to contact us and get help," Johnson said.

Johnson says their goal is to raise money and to work with Birmingham funeral homes. Johnson says the group does not want to handle the funds but rather give the money directly to the funeral homes to cover the family's expenses.
