BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police are investigating a homicide in the Titusville community.

The body of a black male was pulled from a home in the Center Court Apartments Thursday morning. The apartments are located in the 500 block of Center Street and 6th Avenue South.

Birmingham police identified the victim as Starlanda Brown, a 54-year-old man from Birmingham.

A security guard doing rounds at the apartments discovered the victim's body and called police to the scene around 9:20 a.m. Police are classifying the case as a homicide investigation.

Family members say Brown was disabled mentally and physically. Dewayne Brown, Starlanda's brother, says their sister cashed his disability check on Wednesday and gave Starlanda the money. Dewayne says he saw his brother yesterday downtown near the Jefferson County courthouse.

Dewayne Brown says investigators told him his brother was struck in the back of the head. A family member said Brown would not hurt a fly, and that's why the family can't understand why anyone would hurt him.

"He was just a person who lived in the neighborhood and would do anything for anybody," Brown said. "If they were trying to rob him, they just ask for it and he would have given it to them."

A friend of the family expressed outrage at the murder.

"It's tragic. It continues to happen every day...It's pathetic we are so immune to it right now," Keith Mims said.

No arrests have been made yet in this case. Anyone with information in the case in encouraged to call Birmingham Police at 205-328-9311.
