BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police say a man evicted from his apartment Thursday returned to the complex Friday morning and allegedly shot the apartment manager in the office.

Police charged suspect Clifford Cook, 72, with attempted murder Friday afternoon. Cook turned himself in to authorities after the shooting.

Police spokesperson Sgt. Johnny Williams says Cook was evicted yesterday from the Four Winds West apartments in southwest Birmingham, but his belongings remained inside his apartment. Williams says he returned to the complex on Friday morning in a van and rammed several cars in the parking lot with his vehicle. He also allegedly hit several cars with a hammer.

Williams says the suspect then entered the apartment office, had a confrontation with the manager and shot the female apartment manager. The shooting happened around 10 a.m. in the 1300 block of Monroe Avenue.

The victim in the shooting was taken to UAB Hospital for immediate surgery, Sgt. Williams said.

Police say Cook turned himself in to Birmingham City Jail on 6th Avenue South after the shooting.

"The suspect is in custody. Some how he managed to make it to the city jail. We are not sure how he made it there. He left his vehicle at this location but he did turn himself in," Sgt. Johnny Williams said.

Cook is being held on a $60,000 bond in the Jefferson County Jail.

As of 4 p.m., there was no update available on the victim's condition.
