BESSEMER, AL (WBRC) -

Bessemer police have charged a man with murder in a Friday night shooting. Bessemer police responded to Shades Street and Carter Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 on a call of a person shot.

Officers found a black male in the street, unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound, Lieutenant Darron Hunter with the Bessemer Police Department said. Fire department officials also responded to the scene and declared the victim dead.

Police identified the victim as John Howard Hines. Police say Hines and the alleged shooter were acquaintances and got into an argument with each other. Officers took a suspect into custody after the shooting.

Lieutenant Hunter said Monday a capital murder warrant has been obtained against Derick Cox, 49, for the murder of John Hines.

Cox is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $750,000 bond, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office website.
