Birmingham school board president Edward Maddox has resigned after being arrested today on charges of using his official position for personal gain.
Two separate warrants were filed against Maddox today in a Jefferson County district court.
One warrant accuses Edward Maddox of using his position for either personal financial gain or for the financial gain of a family member.
The second one says he voted to increase the salary for his daughter Melody Alston, who is any employee of the Birmingham Board of Education.
Maddox was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 10:25 a.m. Tuesday morning and was released at 10:59 a.m. after posting a $1,000 bond, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office website.
Tuesday evening, Maddox's attorney Richard Jaffe issued a statement on his behalf announcing Maddox's resignation. The statement says Maddox will enter a plea to "two unintentional misdemeanor ethics violations."
His attorney says Maddox "regrets his misjudgment and accepts full responsibility for his actions" and is "relieved that he and his family did not have to endure a trial on this matter."
