Police say a 15-year-old female sophomore student died yesterday after having a medical emergency at the school. A spokesperson for Oxford City Schools says the girl had the emergency in the presence of another student while in the restroom in between classes. A faculty member and school nurse responded, closely followed by Oxford police officers and first responders with the Oxford Fire Department.
The student was taken to Regional Medical Center in Anniston where she died. Police have not released her name.
Oxford High School canceled their B-team's Monday night football game since it included several of the student's classmates. Friends have requested that students at the school wear purple on Tuesday in memory of the teen.
The school has counselors available to students and teachers today and until the end of the week.
