The Spain Park High School Mock Trial Team.A group of students from Spain Park High School stranded in New York City from Hurricane Sandy are hoping to be back in Birmingham by tomorrow.
The students are part of a 12-member mock trial team that was competing in an international competition in New York City. They were scheduled to fly back to Birmingham Monday night, but Sandy changed those plans.
The students spent most of their stay in a hotel near the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge. The hotel never lost power through the storm.
Team member Noah Crawford spoke to Fox 6 over Skype Monday night and said the team has been finding fun things to do, even making new friends with other teams. They've set up impromptu mock debate trials with other teams stranded in the same hotel.
"We're hoping we can get out by Wednesday. We found out the airports are flooded, just depends on how much damage there is," Crawford said.
The students have been able to keep in touch with their parents through email and phone calls.
