BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Birmingham police are investigating an ATM theft at a business on 4th Avenue North downtown. The theft happened around 3:30 a.m. Thursday at a Texaco gas station that includes a Mrs. Winners and Sneaky Pete's.
Witnesses say three men in a red pickup backed the truck up to the window. The suspects then attached something to the window and pulled the glass out. According to witnesses, the men grabbed the ATM and loaded it on the truck before driving off north. The witnesses say it happened all within about 15 seconds. Officials say the whole incident was over within one minute and forty-one seconds.
Gas station owner John Creel says after a rash of crime 10 years ago, he installed cameras and lights all around his business. But, he says, if thieves are determined to get in, they'll do just that.
Police say that this isn't the first time such a crime has happened in the city. In the last few months, a Raceway gas station in Hueytown was hit in the same manner. The thieves failed to make off with the ATM, but employees there think that a red pick up was seen during that crime.
