BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Auburn gets their second win of the season 42-7 against the New Mexico State Aggies.
The Auburn Tigers faithful geared up for their homecoming game Saturday morning.
The first quarter of play was uneventful with neither team being able to get anything happening on offense. New Mexico State started a sustained drive down to Auburn's 30 yard-line before the end of the first quarter of play.
The start of the second quarter saw the Aggies driving in Tigers' territory. New Mexico made it to as far as the Auburn 29 yard-line when they were forced to attempt a field goal. The 47 yard field goal missed to the left by a few feet leaving the game scoreless.
The Tigers went on a 13 play, 6 minute and 50 second, drive topped off by a five yard run from Tre Mason for a touchdown. The extra point by Cody Parkey was complete putting Auburn up 7-0 over New Mexico. This would be the only score of the half for either team. In the first half the Aggies outgained the Tigers 178 to 140 in total yards.
Auburn came out after the half fired up and headed toward a 7 play 80 yard drive and a Jay Prosch touchdown. The extra point was good and the Tigers lead goes increased to 14-0.
On the next Aggie possession Demetruce McNeal forces an Andrew Manley fumble that was recovered by Auburn's Daren Bates and returned 65 yards for a touchdown. Parkey kick is good to make the score 21-0.
New Mexico State go nowhere on their next possession and are forced to punt. This starts Auburn on another march down the field, 7 plays and 96 yards, toward another touchdown to make it 28-0. Auburn had a chance to score near the end of the 3rd quarter but were unsuccessful in a field goal attempt.
The Aggies answered the Tigers back with a quick possession, 6 plays and 69 yards in 2:31, that ended in a touchdown to bring the score to 28-7 and avoid being shutout. Auburn answers back with a quick possession of their own. After a kickoff return of 45 yards by Onterio McCalebb. Auburn only needs 3 plays and 55 yards before Onterio McCalebb takes the ball in for a touchdown which brings the score to 35-7.
Another unsuccessful possession for the Aggies and a punt give the Tigers the ball on their own 23 yard line. Auburn drives down the field yet again to score in 6 plays using only 3:08 on the clock. The point after is good and the Tigers go up 42-7.
The Aggies come up short in their final possession and the Tigers grab their second victory of the season with a final score of 42-7 at home.
Next Week, Auburn plays at home against the Georgia Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 6pm CT.
