BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Organizations and communities across the FOX6 News viewing area are honoring veterans and other service people this weekend. Check out what's going on where you live and if we're missing an event, email us at newstip@wbrc.com.

Friday, Nov. 9:

St. Vincent's 119: 35 veterans that reside at the Somerby retirement community will be honored Friday, Nov. 9 at 12:30 p.m. with a pinning ceremony and will have their names placed on the Wall of Honor.

Kitty Stone Elementary in Jacksonville will honor all veterans, including their own Sgt. Ben Tomlinson. The event will begin at 2 p.m.

The Cottondale VFW Post 6022 & Ladies Auxiliary will pass out poppies at the University Mall Court and select Winn Dixie stores.

Two WWII aviators who took part in the "Doolittle Raid" will speak at the University of Alabama's Russell Hall auditorium at 2 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 10:

The Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church will hold a special service for all veterans and their families at 11 a.m.

UAB will premiere the film "A French Village Recalls 1944" at 4 p.m. at the Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. The film documents the journey of the Smith-Morgan family of Springville in response to an invitation to be honored by the small French village of Vibraye.

The Cottondale VFW Post 6022 & Ladies Auxiliary will pass out poppies at the University Mall Court and select Winn Dixie stores.

The University of Alabama will hold a pre-game tailgate on the Quad with veterans, dependents and service members from UA and Texas A&M at 11:30 a.m.

Sunday, Nov. 11:

The Birmingham Zoo is offering free admission to active and retired military members and their dependents Sunday and Monday. Click here for more information.

The Gardendale community will host a wreath laying ceremony at the Veterans Gardendale Memorial Park at 3 p.m.

The Cottondale VFW Post 6022 & Ladies Auxiliary will host a post open house complete with barbecue and a dance from 2-5 p.m.

The Alabama Veterans' Memorial Foundation will host a Patriotic Tribute from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the park located off I-459 at the Liberty Park exit.

Monday, Nov. 12:

The Veterans Memorial Park Association of Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority will hold a memorial service at the Veterans Memorial Park on Monday, November 12 at 8:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center will hold a special program in the Sports Atrium of Building 137 at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be served following the event.

The Mountain Top Community Church in Vestavia Hills will hold a special Veterans Day ceremony at 6 p.m. Two soldiers will speak about their service.

The Cottondale VFW Post 6022 & Ladies Auxiliary will host a second open house and membership drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The University of Alabama Veterans Week kicks off in the Ferguson Center in the Heritage Room on the third floor from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (The event was originally scheduled to be held on the quad, but has been moved indoors due to the rain.) The university will hold events throughout the week culminating with the opening of the Center for Veteran and Military Affairs. Click here for a full list of events.

Wallace State is honoring the veterans that are enrolled or have graduated from the college in an online photo exhibit. Click here to view the photos.

Virginia College Cosmetology students are offering $4 haircuts throughout the month of November for veterans. They are located at 488 Palisades Boulevard and on appointment is necessary.
