BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham's Railroad Park was recognized today for winning the Urban Open Space Award from the Urban Land Institute.

This morning, Mayor William Bell and other city leaders presented the actual award at a community celebration held at the park.

Birmingham beat out other finalists, including parks in New York City, Portland and Calgary, to take the first place spot.

The Urban Open Space Award recognizes an outstanding example of well-used public space that has spurred regeneration and transformation of the surrounding community.

The Urban Land Institute said this about Railroad Park on their website:

"Railroad Park occupies the historical seam created by a rail viaduct that bisects downtown Birmingham. The new topography integrates the train experience with a variety of new open-space activities that help organize and stimulate growth in the southern part of downtown while promoting connections north of the railroad."
