Folks in Tuscaloosa take another step on the road to recovery. This morning city leaders and University of Alabama officials held a groundbreaking for a new development.
The new development is called The Lofts at City Center. It's being built on the site of the Old Woodsquare Shopping Center near McFarland and 13th Street. That area took a direct from the April 27 tornado.
Today property owners and city leaders wore hard hats and picked up shovels for a ceremonial ground breaking ceremony this afternoon. Site preparation continued around the event.
It will be a mix of residential housing and retail shopping. That includes restaurants, a grocery and many others stores according to the developer.
He says this will be Tuscaloosa's first mixed use community since the changed zoning standards after the tornado.
Four five-story buildings will be built around parking decks. That and more could encourage a lot of people to live and play at The Lofts once construction ends.
