Single car accident claims the life of an Athens man

ATHENS, AL (WBRC) - A single car crash this afternoon clamied the life of an Athens man. Around 1:40 p.m. 28 year old Joel McAlister Smith was killed when the Chevrolet Monte Carlo he was driving left the roadway, struck a culvert, and overturned.

Smith, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The crash took place on Holt Road, four miles north of Athens. Preliminary reports indicate that speed may have been a factor. Alabama State Troopers are investigating the accident.
