BETH K - UAB Nutritionist Dr. Beth Kitchin joined us with some advice on how to have a fun, festive and healthy holiday! The holidays are a time for enjoying food and friends. But for some, it is also a time to gain weight. But do people really gain weight over the holidays? It makes sense with the abundance of holiday treats over an entire month. But the last big study on this topic - which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine back in the year 2000 - showed that the average weight gain over the holidays was only 1 pound. Keep in mind, that number is an average so some people may have lost weight, stayed the same, or gained more than a pound. The researchers also found that most people did not lose that pound over the next year. So that one pound can add up over the years. So, how can you enjoy the holidays eating festive foods and drinking festive drinks but not gain that pound? Here are some tips (the first three are the most important!):
-Stay Active. The holidays are busy and stressful - but don't skip the exercise.
- Choose the Best and Leave the Rest - Ask yourself what the truly special treats are that you really, really want and then go for it - but don't waste your calories on choices that don't really mean much to you.
- Portions! Portions! Portions! If you can master portion control, you can eat pretty much anything you want!
- Keep a low-calorie drink in your hand. You are less likely to graze at the food table.
- Don't Skimp on Sleep! Studies show you might overeat more when you don't get enough sleep.
- Go shopping. Not for holiday gifts but for healthy foods.
- Don't skip meals to make up for too many calories.
- Avoid All-Or-Nothing Thinking. This goes for both exercise and eating and it is probably the most important tip of all.
CYBER MONDAY - Cyber Monday marks the beginning of the online holiday shopping season for many shoppers. In addition to Black Friday, this one day is starting to play an increasingly critical role in the overall toy buying for the season. From special deals to free shipping, to apps that make even in-store experiences powerful online buying occasions, Cyber Monday is just one example of how online shopping has dramatically changed the retail picture in a few short years. Online sales of toys have grown by more than 10 percent over each of the last four years, and indications are that it will grow even faster in 2012. Chris Byrne, content director of TimetoPlayMag.com discussed the impact of online growth for research and purchase, the advantages of online purchasing, apps that help you be competitive--and things to be cautious about. He also showed some of the hottest toys that parents and gift givers will be clicking for as they make holiday purchasing decisions and provide insight on how parents can get the best deals.
