The Birmingham city council sits in the dark while power is out in the building. Source: Jonathan HardisonA power outage at Birmingham City Hall delayed the city council's regular Tuesday meeting.
The lights went out at city hall and other nearby buildings around 11:30 a.m. Alabama Power crews restored power to the affected area by 12:45 p.m., according to Alabama Power spokesman Ike Pigott.
Pigott said power crews were doing routine maintenance work near the corner of 6th Ave. North and 20th Street in front of the Church of the Advent when they ran into a cable issue. The issue caused the power outage, which affected the City Hall, Board of Education building and other buildings in the area.
Birmingham firefighters responded to City Hall to rescue people stuck in elevators, but the trapped employees managed to escape on their own.
The city council meeting was postponed until 2 p.m.
