FAIRFIELD, AL (WBRC) -

Fairfield police say that a missing special needs child taken by his mother, who doesn't have legal custody, has been found safe.

Police say that 8-year-old Joshua May was taken by his mother, Debra Thomas, 48. They say Joshua is safe and has been returned to his legal guardian.

Thomas has been charged with interference with custody, Fairfield Police Chief Leon Davis said. Her bond for the charge is set at $15,000.

Fairfield police say they will also discuss the case with the DA to assess if any additional charges should be filed.
