VET SPECIALIST - Dr. David Dismukes joined us this morning to talk about your pets! Dr. David Dismukes is a Veterinary Surgeon. He joined us to discuss gastrointestinal foreign bodies in pets. During the holiday season pets are surrounded by things that they are tempted to eat but should not. These 'foreign bodies' range from toxic plants and decorations to leftovers and toys. Often, surgery is required to remove these foreign objects because the pet will not pass them naturally. If you suspect that your pet has eaten something it should not have, contact your family veterinarian as soon as possible. Dr. Dismukes, along with Drs. Milton and Ballagas are Board-Certified Veterinary Surgeons who have undergone extensive post-veterinary school and passed rigorous testing to become specialists in surgery. They offer orthopedic surgery (fracture repair, joint disease, ligament/tendon disease, etc.), general surgery (foreign body removal, tumor removal, abdominal/thoracic surgery, wound reconstruction, etc.), and spinal surgery (disc herniation, spinal fracture, etc.). You can find them at the referral center, Veterinary Surgery of Birmingham: 205-967-9107 <tel:205-967-9107>. GARDENING - Jimmy Rocket with Bug Juice Gardens joined us this morning. He took a look at donards gold monterey cypress, a really pretty cypress and the baby blue cypress to counter the brightness of the gold one. Jimmy said both of these plants do require more sun than shade. And on the topiary baby blue, you do need to occasionally trim it to keep its topiary shape. Jimmy says while the gold monterey looks great in the container and does really well used in your container garden, be aware that its mature height is 20 to 30 feet tall and 10 feet wide. It is always best to read the label or research the growing habit of any plant so you won't have to move it somewhere many years from now. Jimmy recommends planting these two plants in well drained places and use the turkey poop fertilizer to encourage micro organism growth which is what really feeds the plants and the soil. Jimmy says that this plant is new to this area and he got the ones on Good Day from John Deere Landscape off Hwy 119 in Inverness. For more information, call Jimmy at (205) 981-1151, email him at email@example.com, or visit www.rockettsbugjuicegardens.com.
