Authorities say a Heflin police officer who was shot Saturday is alive and improving thanks to the actions of a state trooper.
Officers say Trooper John Lewis applied pressure to Jackie Stovall's gunshot wound. A posting on the Heflin PD Facebook page says the bullet hit a main artery and doctors said most people do not make it to the ER with that kind of wound. Stovall was shot after a triple killing in Cleburne County and chase 25 miles away to Oxford.
Authorities are still trying to verify the identities of the three people shot to death in a mobile home. The suspect, Romero Roberto Moya, is also dead.
