The NWS shared this graphic of the Alabama tornado watch, highlighted in yellow. Pink symbolizes a severe thunderstorm watch. Source: NWSThe tornado watch issued for several west and southwest counties of Alabama has shifted eastward.
The watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. for Autauga, Lowndes, Dallas, Montgomery, Elmore, Perry, Macon, Russell, Barbour, Bullock, Pike, Greene, Hale, Marengo, and Sumter counties.
Earlier in the day the watch zone included Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Dallas, Greene, Hale, Marengo, Mobile, Monroe, Perry, Sumter, Washington, and Wilcox counties. The FOX6 weather team is urging everyone to be weather alert in these areas and also in Bibb, Chilton and Tuscaloosa counties because they are so close to the watch area.
Dr. Tim Coleman reports that when the first line of rain will ended this afternoon, it helped create a situation for increased instability. This rain would have served to stabilize our atmosphere. The absence of this rain will help bring much warmer air from the Gulf and will mix with a cold front that is expected to move through the state later this evening.
These two systems mixing, along with the accompanying thunderstorms, create a scenario for severe weather. The weather team is monitoring our chances for tornadoes, hail and very high winds.
