BESSEMER, AL (WBRC) -

Bessemer police arrested a man suspected of abusing a child in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

Police received multiple 911 calls reporting a man abusing a child in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart on Academy Drive around 4:44 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24.

Officers responded to the scene and found 22-year-old Brandon Roberts with three children.

"The youngest child had a visible bruise on the child's forehead and the child had been crying," Lieutenant Darron Hunter with the Bessemer Police Department said.

Lt. Hunter said the child's mother walked up while police were speaking with Roberts. Meanwhile, other officers reviewed surveillance video of the incident. Police have not said what Roberts' relationship was with the children.

"The video showed the youngest child falling while walking to their car, being snatched up and while being held by the arm struck several times by the suspect while still walking," Lt. Hunter said.

Police say Roberts then set the child down, but when the child fell down again, he "picked the child up by the arm again and hit the child on the back and head."

Bessemer police arrested Roberts and charged him with willful abuse of a child. His bond is set at $100,000.

The child was evaluated at Children's Hospital and the other children who were also with Roberts at the time were placed in protective custody.
