
As New Year celebrations went on through the night, the Birmingham police were on alert. They started their night with preparations for "Operation Crackdown."
Operation Crackdown is an effort to cut back on celebratory gunfire. The focus is to prevent injuries from stray bullets.
Police let our FOX6 News crews spend part of the night with them as they patrolled the streets. As of 3 a.m., they seized seven weapons and made five misdemeanor firearms arrests.
Birmingham PD says they made 23 misdemeanor arrests and 2 felony arrests over New Year's night. Seven weapons were seized total and one person had their fireworks seized.
Police also took more than 600 gunfire calls for service.
