2013 VACATION GUIDE - The Alabama Tourism Department released its 2013 Vacation Guide and Calendar of Events. The new combined publication makes it easier to find information on events, destinations, road trips, civil rights anniversaries and golfing in the state. A photo of the beach of Gulf Shores is the on the cover of the publication and the inside includes special sections for Road Trips, Alabama Food, Civil Rights, shopping and golf. The Road Trips were written by members of the tourism staff and freelance journalists. The section begins on page six and showcases 30 trips to include a BCS Championship Tour, a Romantic Getaway to Mobile, A Girlfriends Getaway to the Eastern Shore, Spring Break at the Beach, Taking it to the Streets in downtown Birmingham, a Eufaula Pilgrimage, a To Kill A Mockingbird Experience in Monroeville, A Bicentennial Commemoration of the Creek Indian War, a View from Lookout Mountain in Fort Payne and Gee's Bend Quilters. The Alabama Food section highlights farm-to-table fare, farmer's markets, chefs and wineries around the state. A special page on 2013 Civil Rights events in Birmingham is on page 25, made-in-Alabama products can be found on page 26 and the top 18 golf spots in Alabama begins on page 28. Information on the North Alabama region can be found on page 38, the central region begins on page 62, South Alabama begins on page 90 and the Gulf Coast starts on page 116. The Vacation Guide and Calendar of Events have been two separate publications, but for the first time they are combined into one publication. The Vacation Guide portion also includes overviews of each of the four regions of the state; North, Central, South and Gulf Coast. The publication is 222 pages with the Vacation Guide starting on page 1 and the Calendar of Events portion begins on page 162. The events calendar is a scaled down version with the full listings on the tourism website, www.Alabama.travel. KELVIN LIVE - The 7th Annual BBVA Compass Bowl will be played Saturday at noon (CST) at historic Legion Field in Birmingham. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN. The Ole Miss Rebels and Pittsburgh Panthers, two football programs with rich bowl histories, will play in the seventh annual BBVA Compass Bowl. With this year's berths in the BBVA Compass Bowl, Ole Miss and Pitt have combined for 63 bowl appearances. This will be the first meeting between the schools. Ole Miss ranks 13th in the nation with 21 bowl victories and is now tied for 19th in bowl appearances with 34. Overall, the Rebels have compiled a 21-12 record in bowl games. Ole Miss will be making its first bowl appearance since the 2009 season. The Rebels have won eight of their last nine bowl games, including three straight in the Cotton Bowl in 2004, 2009 and 2010. The Rebels played in their first bowl game following the 1935 season when they appeared in the Orange Bowl. The BBVA Compass Bowl will be Ole Miss' first bowl appearance in Birmingham. The Rebels last played at Legion Field in 1977 (vs. Alabama). Pittsburgh (6-6, 3-4 Big East) is making its 29th bowl appearance overall and 10th since 2000 (13 seasons). The Panthers are playing in the BBVA Compass Bowl for the third consecutive year. Pitt has claimed nine national championships in its history, sixth-highest in the college ranks. COMEDIAN - April Macie travels the world collecting stories and experiences, which she then translates into humorous, relatable tales in front of audiences worldwide. April has been to over 23 countries, 12 of those performing stand-up comedy for the troops, was a finalist on NBC's Last Comic Standing in 2006, has appeared on E! Entertainment, Fuel TV, HSN, Sirius and XM Radio, Bob & Tom, Access Hollywood, and was labeled an "emerging talent to watch" by the Hollywood Reporter at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in 2005. She is currently in the documentary, "I Am Comic" which premiered at the 2010 Slamdance Film Festival and is currently airing on Showtime and will also be appearing on Showtime in the stand-up special "Vegas Is My Oyster" premiering August 5th. Currently, she spends most of her time traveling the United States as a headlining stand-up comedian.
