The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department has identified the victim in a weekend homicide.

Around 12:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5., sheriff's deputies responded to a call of a body found in the 2200 Block of Shady Grove Road near Maytown in Western Jefferson County.

The body of 40-year-old Charles Smothers of Adamsville was found by a relative who had been searching for the victim. The victim's vehicle was found burned along Woodruff Mill road on Thursday. The victim had not been reported missing.

The cause of death being withheld until the coroner's report has been released, but investigators say there was obvious trauma.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office at 205-325-1450 or Crimestoppers at 205-254-7777.
