After 18 years on the bench, Jefferson County Circuit Judge Scott Vowell is leaving the bench.
Today Vowell spent much of the day packing up his office. For the last ten years, Vowell has been presiding court judge overseeing all of the courts in Jefferson County. Vowell says he will miss the people he has met over the years. But, the judge says the court system will be facing a major financial problem in the coming years.
"I think our biggest problem is adequate funding. I don't think the public understands just how vital the courts are to be the glue that holds our society together," Vowell said.
Vowell also said the partisan election of judges is a problem. He believes a new system of appointing judges should be set up.
While Vowell may be leaving the bench, he is not giving up judging. Vowell will set up a mediation, arbitration and private judging practice. This can happen if both sides in a civil case hire a private judge.
