Could your cell phone number be released to the public? Ronda Robinson investigated this rumor to see if there's any truth to the claim.
Many people get very few junk calls on their cell phone and they'd like to keep it that way. They're not alone as millions of people are taking steps to keep telemarketers away from their cell phones.
The amount of phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry has exploded and at last check there were 139 million numbers.
An email is circulating that claims cell phone numbers are going public this month. It even offers a phone number for those hoping to get on the National Do Not Call Registry.
In addition, the National Do Not Call Registry's website says that scammers have been calling consumers claiming to be from the registry, offering an opportunity to register a phone number. They say these are not legitimate calls and consumers should not respond to them or offer any personal information.
Ronda also checked with the Federal Trade Commission's press office and was told that consumers should not be concerned about their cell phone numbers being released to telemarketers at any time in the near future.
According to FTC regulations telemarketers cannot use automated dialers to call cell phone numbers without customer consent.
While the telecommunications industry has been discussing the possibility of creating a wireless 411 directory, according to the FCC, most telemarketing calls to cell phones would still be illegal, regardless of whether the number is listed on the federal government's National Do Not Call Registry.
The FTC does not think it is necessary to register your cell phone number at this time.
In case you were wondering the National Do Not Call Registry accepts registrations from both cell phones and land lines. You must call from the phone number that you want to register.
If you register online, you must respond to a confirmation e-mail. The registry's phone number is 888-382-1222 and you can also register online at https://www.donotcall.gov.
