BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Guests can start booking a room at Birmingham's newest hotel. Wednesday, Tad Snider, the Executive Director of the BJCC, announced the Westin Hotel will be opening Feb. 14.

Last week the Sheraton General Manager Mike Noyes was named as the Complex General Manger for both the Sheraton and Westin. Noyes says special plans are being made for the first guest.

"The first guest coming into the hotel will be staying with us for eleven days. We will be doing something special for this quest. This individual doesn't know they are going to be our first guest We will be putting in the wow factor that he or she will want to come back to Birmingham for a long time," Noyes said.

Work was underway at the Westin Hotel Wednesday wrapping up some of the final work. Noyes says the new hotel rooms along with the restaurants and bars will add to the lure for visitors to downtown Birmingham.

"The opportunity for us complexing both hotels affords us the opportunity for use to get out to the convention market and expand the opportunity about what we can offer here," Noyes said.

Adding to the excitement will be the entertainment district which is expected to open late summer. Wednesday there was another big announcement. Nationally known chef, Clayton Sherrod, and his company will be taking over food services for all events at the BJCC.

"They really focus on fresh healthy food people want to eat when they come and visit now. Partnering with Clayton Sherrod having a community presents, kind of investing in the community," Snider said.

To compete for more convention business the convention complex has seen several renovations.

"The complex is in the best shape it has been in years. We've done a lot of work . You can go anywhere in the complex and not have to go outside," Dennis Lathem,, BJCC Board Chairman said.

Officials with the BJCC have high hopes for the Westin and entertainment district. They all realize the first impression will be key not only for their success but for downtown Birmingham.
