Flooding in west Alabama caused four barges to get loose during a tow in the Lock 7 dam near Greensboro overnight. The tow was pushing eight barges when four of them got stuck in the spillway.
One 600 ton barge remained stuck on Friday afternoon. The barge was loaded with coal when it got loose from a group of barges. It struck a bridge and a train trestle near the Greene and Hale county line before eventually running ashore in the dam's spillway.
"The barge that is partially sunk was filled with coal. It's lost about half of its load in the river," Hale County EMA Director Russell Weeden said.
"ADEM is on the scene, assessing the situation. As far as any health hazards, we don't expect any problems such as that," Weeden added.
Authorities hope to have the overturned barge removed later today.
