A man who helped integrate the University of Alabama will be buried Thursday. The funeral for James Hood is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Gadsden.
Hood, along with Vivian Malone, enrolled at the University of Alabama in June, 1963. This was right after Governor George Wallace gave his defiant "schoolhouse door" speech. Moments after the political demonstration, Hood and Jones both became students.
In recognition of that moment that helped change the university and move our state forward, UA will ring Denny Chimes as Hood's funeral begins.
James Hood was 70-years-old.
