The Birmingham Barons and Regions Bank have released the logo that will be used for the Baron's new stadium in downtown Birmingham, Regions Field.
The new logo, shaped like a baseball diamond and featuring Regions' signature green color, is intended to connect Birmingham's tradition of baseball to the more modern stadium that is being built near Railroad Park, according to a release from Regions.
"Similar to the logo, Regions Field blends aspects of Birmingham's baseball past -- including elements similar to the city's historic Rickwood Field (the nation's oldest surviving ballpark) with architectural elements found downtown," the news release explains.
Plans for the new baseball stadium include more than just a venue for watching America's pastime. There will also be play areas for kids, batting cages, areas for corporate parties and plenty of space for large groups to hold a game-day picnic.
Local design firm Luckie & Co. came up with the design, and the field is being built by a team including Birmingham's Hoskins Architecture and the Dallas-based HKS, Inc.
The stadium is schdeuled to open on April 10, 2013.
