Freezing rain expected Friday morning

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The FOX6 StormWarn team says Alabama may see more weather delays as freezing rain is expected to hit on Friday morning.

According to Chief Meteorologist J.P. Dice, the rain will be arriving around 3 a.m. The peak time for the freezing rain is expected to be between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. After 8 a.m., the temperatures should warm up and begin to thaw out with highs in the low 40's.

Dice says people should not confuse freezing rain with frozen raindrops.

"Freezing rain is not frozen raindrops.  It sometimes starts as snow failing from a cloud and then melting through a warm layer and then freezing on-contact when surface temperatures are at 32 or below," said Dice in the FOX6 Weather Blog.

According to Dice, most of the ice issues appear to be heading to East Alabama, due to some colder temperatures there. Even if you are not located in that area, ice can still form on bridges and elevated areas across the state. Anyone traveling in the morning should exercise caution. The main concern for travel issues will be Cullman, Blount, Etowah, Cherokee, Calhoun, Cleburne and Randolph Counties.
