WINSTON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Authorities say an effort to help save animals only made the situation worse.

Winston County investigators say Jerilyn Curtis, 19, and Angel Kitchens, 18, are charged with 23 counts of animal cruelty each.

The two volunteered at the Walker County Animal Shelter. The Winston County Sheriff's Office says they took dogs from the shelter to the Black Pond community to save the pets from being euthanized. Deputies were tipped off and say they discovered the dogs living in bad conditions.

Of the 23 dogs rescued seven had to be put down.

Both women are being held on a $6,900 bond each.
