Editorial: Mr. Charles Poland

Editorial: Mr. Charles Poland

The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

When we go to work, we don't always know what the day will bring. But, few of us expect to face what Dale County school bus driver, Mr. Charles Poland, Jr., did last week, or the violence that confronted the elementary school teachers in Newtown, Connecticut in December.

These adults put themselves between the children in their care and sick, violent individuals who would harm them. They did this without regard for their own safety. They have, rightfully, been called heroes.

Heroism is the stuff about which books are written and movies made. The heroes themselves seem to be almost super human or saints. But, in reality, our heroes are our neighbors and friends, the likes of firemen and soldiers, now teachers and, last week, school bus driver, Mr. Poland.

Our sympathy and prayers are with Mr. Poland's family.
