GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) -

People who enter the campus at Gadsden State Community College are now looking at a new lay of the land.

Monday, a parade and ribbon cutting marked the end of major construction for the college's gateway to its main two Gadsden campuses. Supporters say the new entrance provides greater access for students and the public.

The Alabama School of Trades and Gadsden State Junior College merged more than 20 years ago, and this new entrance unites both campuses. It also provides a new traffic light and "walk/don't walk" signs.

"But I guess it's been a couple of months ago, Ray, you brought, I guess a video of that, that particular intersection to a state board meeting. And he reminded me of this, that there were many gasps in the crowd as there were several near-accidents," Dr. Mark Heinrich, the two-year college chancellor, said.

An estimated 24,000 cars drive through that area every day.
