Joshua Fredrick
The scene of the accident on Church Street Bridge in Warrior. The principal of Mortimer Jordan High School and law enforcement authorities say a student was killed after being involved in a vehicle accident on Monday.
The accident happened around 5 p.m. on Church Street Bridge in Warrior. The victim has been identified as Joshua Fredrick, a member of the Mortimer Jordan Track Team.
Fredrick had just finished his first day of track practice and was heading home when he ran off the road and into a tree. His Driver's Ed teacher Shayne Carnes said his heart sank at the news.
"In my four years of teaching Driver's Ed, Josh was in my top five drivers of all time," he said.
Mortimer Jordan Principal Barbara Snider said the whole school is in shock, and prayers and love are with his family.
Snider described Josh as a great kid and a leader at the school. She listed several of his wonderful attributes, his character, his love for people and even his last post on Facebook, the Scripture Isaiah 40:8.
"And it says, 'The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord remains forever.' And to think that's the last thing we'll hear from him speaks that we know he's in a better place," Snider said.
The wall near the front foyer of the school will be dedicated as a memorial to Josh. But more than remembering his picture, teachers hope students will remember his life.
"I'd like to think Josh has left a legacy of kindness and compassion for other people," she said.
Principal Snider said counselors and a youth pastor will be at the high school offering support to students.
