Pending a civil service meeting tonight, Gadsden police hope to add five more officers to their ranks.
Police administrators say they have five ready to go, with their already completed background checks and psychological profiles. The hires would bring the workforce up to 97 sworn officers. The civil service board has the final say.
Gadsden police are refilling their ranks after losing officers for the same reason the fire department lost firefighters: a buyout by the city and for some of the department's veteran, higher paid officers.
"We've just had a lot of older guys and women that have been here a long time. And a lot of them were ranking officers. So, it kind of had a ripple effect. We've had to do a lot of promotions here in the last few months, and hire some folks, too," Captain Bobby Jackson said.
The civil service board will hear that request at their regular meeting at Gadsden City Hall on Tuesday night.
