Good Day Alabama for February 14, 2013

Posted: Updated:

Here is what you saw on Good Day Alabama for February 14, 2013:

CRUISE SHIP - Relief is in site for over 4,000 thousand passengers on carnival's cruise ship "triumph". It is expected to dock in mobile today. They have been stranded in the Gulf of Mexico since Sunday. That's when a fire in the engine room of the ship knocked out the vessel's propulsion system. There have been reports of deteriorating conditions aboard the vessel like overflowing toilets and limited access to food.
When the ship docks -- Carnival has arranged for some passengers to fly home on chartered flights. Others will be transported by charter buses to hotels in Mobile and New Orleans. We talked with a reporter live in Mobile waiting for the ship to arrive and a husband driving from Texas to Mobile to pick his wife up from her trip. And FOX6 has a crew on the way to the scene to bring us updates later today as the ship comes into the Mobile Port.

JEH JEH LIVE - February is Black History Month and Jeh Jeh celebrates with the Lawson State Community Choir under the direction of Bessie Shelton.

DR. F - It's Valentine's Day but not everyone has a sweetheart to share it with so we turned to Dr. Wayne Fleisig, a Psychologist at Children's Hospital. His advice for those alone on Valentine's Day:
1) Use the day as an opportunity to make some changes to improve your chances of good future relationships
2) Work on making your life full in other ways
3) Determine how you have "survived" past lonely times, and use these coping skills now
4) Use this day to show love in other ways
5) Do something fun

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIMSUIT EDITION - Sports Illustrated has launched countless careers in fashion, TV, film and business: Carol Alt, Kathy Ireland, Cheryl Teigs, Christie Brinkley, Tyra Banks, Marisa Miller and Brooklyn Decker, just to name a few. Today we talked with the cover model, Kate Upton, and the magazine editor about the newest issue of its Swimsuit Edition. The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit franchise reaches more than 70 million people annually, and more men 18 to 34 than the Super Bowl.  The iconic franchise now spans more than 20 product extensions in digital social, broadcast, publishing, mobile and consumer products, along with supporting a vibrant experiential marketing business.

BEYOND BELIEF - The Church of Scientology is one of the most secretive and controversial organizations in the world.  Now for the first time, a former member of the Church, a young woman born into it as the niece of its leader, David Miscavige, has put pen to paper and exposed what it is like to grow up in and ultimately escape from the Church.  That person is Jenna Miscagive Hill, and her remarkable memoir is BEYOND BELIEF: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape.  In this dramatic exposé, Jenna pulls back the curtain of secrecy and mystery to reveal a society of conformity, intimidation, fear, and control over its most vulnerable and loyal believers. Never before has Scientology been explored in a firsthand account in such depth and detail and the story Jenna shares is unsettling.  A third generation Scientologist, Jenna was born into the belief, but it wasn't until age seven that Scientology truly consumed her life.  It was then that, despite her uncle being the head of the Church, she was sent to live at the "Ranch" in the California desert where she, along with all the other children, performed manual labor, while also being educated and trained for a life in the Church of Scientology's most devout order, the Sea Org.  Because of their own commitments to the Church, Jenna was separated from her parents for most of her childhood, and yet throughout her youth and into her teenage years as a Sea Org Cadet, she remained devoted to the Church's practices, rarely questioning the strange rituals and increasingly abstract ideology.  Following orders was part of her life in the Sea Org where questioning the rules was not only discouraged, it was punished.  Hard as life on the Ranch was, it was only the beginning, and from this prolonged separation from her parents to the process behind her indoctrination into the religion, Jenna goes behind the scenes of the Sea Org's oppressive and alienating culture, detailing an environment rooted in control in which the most devoted followers often face the harshest punishments when they fall out of line. Exploring Scientology through the lens of these and her many other experiences, Jenna delves into controversial topics such as life inside the Sea Org, the mysterious David Miscavige, the treatment of children, controlling of young minds, celebrities and scientology, and Jenna's suicide attempt.
