Ripken's son, Ryan, to redshirt at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The son of baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken did not make the final roster for South Carolina and will redshirt this season.

The Gamecocks roster was released Friday, a few hours before the team opened the season against Liberty. Ryan Ripken was taken in the 20th round of last year's Major League Baseball draft by his father's team, the Baltimore Orioles. Ryan Ripken took part in the team's preseason scrimmages, but was not among the players first-year manager Chad Holbrook kept on the roster.

Ryan Ripken is a 6-foot-5 first baseman who hit .377 and drove in 25 runs as a senior at Gilman High School in Baltimore last season.
