Editorial: Electronic Bingo

The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

There are few issues that create more controversy in our state than the continued wrangling about electronic bingo. Once more, it has taken center stage this week as Alabama's Attorney General's office has again raided and shut down VictoryLand, while at the same time, filing a lawsuit to stop the operation of slot machines at casinos owned by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.

The debate on the pros and the cons of electronic gambling will again reignite this week as we slog through what will most likely be another protracted legal battle with each side claiming they are on the right side of the law.

While many, certainly those in a position to enforce Alabama law, believe the law is clear - gambling is illegal and those breaking the law must pay the price - lots of other folks don't believe the law is so cut and dry. Why not put it to rest once and for all? Put it on the ballot. Let Alabamians decide.
