Fire officials say that Belinda Parnell was taken to UAB with significant burns to her torso after guiding her patient, Ricky Williams, out of the burning house. Williams, who is quadrapalegic, was not injured but has been taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Parnell suffered second degree burns on her arm, neck and back, but she says she's just glad they both escaped. She says she heard a popping noise and then flames starting coming from the front room of the house on 4th Avenue West.
She tried to put it out with an extinguisher but couldn't.
"I thought we were going to die it progressed so fast," Parnell said.
The house and everything inside was destroyed. Fire officials have not released a cause for the blaze.
