Here is what you saw on Good Day Alabama for February 26, 2013:
JEH JEH LIVE - In commemoration of Dental Health Month, the Jefferson County Department of Health will host National Give Kids A Smile Day on Thursday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This day will be celebrated by providing free dental care and education to children 5-16 years of age with no dental health insurance. The event will be held at the Central Health Clinic 1400 6th Avenue, South 35233. For information or to schedule an appointment, please call (205) 930-1017.
The American Dental Association began the Give Kids A Smile program in 2003 as a way for dental professionals to join with others in the community to provide dental services to underserved children.
Three important dental facts to remember:
1. Patients and parents should establish a dental home early - by age 1.
2. Beginning at age 1, everyone should visit their dentist at least twice a year. The only way to determine oral health problems is to visit a dentist.
3. Cavities are preventable. Limit daily sugary snack/beverage intake. Brush twice a day; especially before bedtime. Flossing should occur anywhere the teeth touch.

CITIES FOR LIFE - Cities for Life and UAB recently launched http://www.mydiabetesconnect.com, a free customized resource website to help promote healthy lifestyles, reduce the risk of diabetes and encourage diabetes management in Birmingham. Cities for Life is a diabetes management program underway in Birmingham that is led by the American Academy of Family Physicians with support from Sanofi US. This new website is the program's most recent offering to help people living with diabetes or at risk for diabetes in our community. To demonstrate how the site can be most useful, come to one of two demonstrations at local libraries:
· Five Points West Library (4812 Avenue W) at February 27, 2013 at 10:30 a.m.
· Central Downtown Library (2100 Park Place) February 28, 2013 at 6 p.m.
The site answers question about how Birmingham residents can locate programs and services near them on healthy eating, physical activity, healthy families, support and education, healthcare, & research opportunities.

GARDENING - Jimmy Rockett joined us this morning to show us some pretty blooming perennials that are great for your containers. Jimmy says the rule of thumb is that if you buy blooming perennials right now, know that they were probably grown in a green house to bloom early and that when you plant them outside and we get a frost, they might be burnt. So you must cover them up! With that being said, it is great to get bloomimg plants now to freshen up your containers. Jimmy says that when a few plants die in a container, remember, all you have to do is reach in and pull out the dead plant, remove some of the soil, add new soil and the new plant. This will revive the container with new life. Jimmy also says to add some new bark and /or moss. This helps to help the pot from drying out and to protect the roots from frost or cold. For more information, call Jimmy at (205) 981-1151, email him at email@example.com, or visit www.rockettsbugjuicegardens.com.
