TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

A West Alabama officer has a broken leg after being run over by an ATV.

The officer responded to reports of people riding ATVs into residents yards and tearing them up along Brookwood Parkway. He pursued the three suspects on two ATVs for about two miles down Covered Bridge Road towards the interstate.

At one point the ATVs turned onto a gravel road and turned around. When the officer stepped out of his car and ordered the suspects to stop, one of them hit the gas and ran him over.

Brookwood Police Chief Randy Kizziah describes what happened next.

"One of the [ATVs] ran over my officer, up his body, up to his chest with the tire causing injury to his right leg. As the vehicle was doing this, the officer fired two shots through the bottom of the vehicle and struck the subject."

All three suspects escaped and later turned themselves in. The suspect accused of running over the officer was shot twice. He surrendered by calling 9-1-1 for medical attention. He and the officer remain at the hospital.
